An ambitious novel in which Vargas Llosa attempts to recount the social history of Peru, framed by a conversation that takes place in a cafe called The Cathedral between Santiago Zaualita, a wealthy but dissatisfied member of the bourgeoisie, and Ambrosio Pardo, a servant and at one time chauffeur for Santiago`s father.
